Tri Fold Brochure Size: A4, DL & US Letter — Exact Dimensions in mm, cm & Inches (India Guide)

tri fold brochure size A4 DL A5 dimensions

We print tri fold brochures every day at Tagsen — for real estate agents in Ahmedabad, hospitals in Surat, restaurants in Mumbai, and corporate teams across India. Since 2017, over 5,000+ print jobs later, we have seen every size mistake that a brochure design can have.

This guide is written from that experience — not from copying other websites.

If you are planning a tri fold brochure and want to get the size right before it goes to press, this is the only guide you need.

What is the Standard Tri Fold Brochure Size?

The standard tri fold brochure size in India and globally is A4 — 297 × 210 mm flat, folding down to approximately 99 × 210 mm per panel. In the United States, the standard is 8.5 × 11 inches flat (approximately 3.67 × 8.5 inches folded).

A tri fold brochure — also called a trifold brochure, three fold brochure, or 3 fold brochure — is printed on a single flat sheet that is folded into three sections. This creates six panels: three on the outside and three on the inside. It is one of the most practical printed formats because it fits in brochure stands, DL envelopes, and jacket pockets with equal ease.

Tagsen Print Tip: Always set up your design file at the flat (unfolded) size and add 3 mm bleed on all four outer edges. We check every file we receive — but starting with the right setup saves everyone time.

A4 Tri Fold Brochure Size

Flat size: 297 × 210 mm (29.7 × 21 cm | 11.69 × 8.27 inches)
Each panel when folded: Approximately 99 × 210 mm (outer panels), 96–97 mm (inner panel)
Fold line positions: 96–97 mm and 195–196 mm from the left edge (landscape orientation)

The A4 tri fold is the most commonly ordered format at Tagsen. It fits into standard brochure display racks, C5 envelopes, and A4 presentation folders — which makes it versatile for business, hospitality, real estate, and healthcare use.

From our press floor: A real estate company in Ahmedabad once sent us an A4 file set up at 210 × 297 mm (portrait) instead of 297 × 210 mm (landscape). The panels were completely wrong. Always confirm your orientation before designing — A4 tri fold runs landscape.

Best used for:

  • Corporate company profiles
  • Real estate property brochures
  • Hospital and healthcare information sheets
  • Product and service guides
  • School and education brochures

US Letter Tri Fold Brochure Size

Flat size: 279 × 216 mm (27.9 × 21.6 cm | 11 × 8.5 inches)
Each panel when folded: Approximately 93 mm wide × 216 mm tall (3.67 inches wide × 8.5 inches tall)
Fold line positions: 3.625 inches and 7.313 inches from the left edge

The US Letter format is standard in North America. At Tagsen, we print this format for clients with international branches or US-market materials. Each panel is slightly narrower than A4 when folded, giving a taller, more column-like layout.

Best used for:

  • US corporate and marketing materials
  • Trade show handouts for international events
  • Export-facing product catalogues

DL Tri Fold Brochure Size

Flat size: 210 × 99 mm (21 × 9.9 cm | 8.27 × 3.9 inches) — set your design file landscape
Each panel when folded: Approximately 70 × 99 mm
Fits into: Standard DL envelope (220 × 110 mm)

The DL format is a compact, elegant option widely used for direct mail, restaurant takeaway menus, hotel information cards, and event invitations. Because it fits directly into a DL envelope without additional folding, it is the go-to size for any mailing campaign.

From our press floor: DL brochures are popular with hotels and restaurants because they fit neatly on a reception desk or table without taking up too much space. The compact format forces designers to be concise — which often results in better communication than a crowded A4.

Common confusion: A DL flyer is a single, unfolded sheet measuring 210 × 99 mm. A DL tri fold brochure uses the same flat size — 210 × 99 mm — but is folded into three panels of approximately 70 × 99 mm each. Same flat size, completely different product. When placing your order with Tagsen, always specify which one you need.

Best used for:

  • Restaurant menus and takeaway leaflets
  • Hotel room information cards
  • Event invitations and mailers
  • Compact product launches

A5 Tri Fold Brochure Size

Flat size: 210 × 148 mm (21 × 14.8 cm | 8.27 × 5.83 inches)
Each panel when folded: Approximately 70 × 148 mm (2.76 × 5.83 inches)

The A5 tri fold is the smallest standard tri fold format. Each folded panel is only 70 mm wide — slightly narrower than a standard credit card is tall (85.6 mm). This makes it ideal for quick-reference content, compact handouts, and situations where you want something pocket-sized.

Because the surface area is smaller, design needs to be even more disciplined. Fewer words per panel. Larger type. More white space.

Best used for:

  • Conference and exhibition handouts
  • Product quick-start guides
  • Tourist and travel information cards
  • Compact event schedules

Panel Sizes: The Most Misunderstood Part of Tri Fold Design

This is the section that most online guides skip over, and it is the one that causes the most print problems.

When a tri fold brochure is folded, all three panels are not the same width. The panel that folds inward — tucking underneath the front cover — must be slightly narrower than the other two. If all three panels are equal, the inner panel has nowhere to go. The brochure buckles, bulges at the spine, and the edges may crack on heavy paper stock.

Exact Panel Widths — A4 Tri Fold:

PanelPositionWidth
Back panelOutside left99 mm
Front panel (cover)Outside right99 mm
Inner flapFolds inside96–97 mm

Exact Panel Widths — US Letter Tri Fold:

PanelPositionWidth
Back panelOutside left3.6875 inches
Front panel (cover)Outside right3.6875 inches
Inner flapFolds inside3.625 inches

From our press floor: The thicker the paper, the more offset you need. At 150 GSM we reduce the inner panel by 2 mm. At 250 GSM we go to 4 mm. If you are unsure, send us your file and we will check the panel setup before printing — this is included in our service at no extra charge.

Paper Guide: GSM, Finish & What Works in Indian Printing

Paper choice affects how your brochure feels, how long it lasts, and whether it folds cleanly. Here is what we have learned from running 5,000+ print jobs on Indian presses since 2017.

Paper Weight (GSM) Guide

GSMFeelBest ForTagsen Verdict
130 GSMLightweightBulk handouts, high-volume campaignsFolds fine, but feels light in hand
170 GSMStandard brochure weightMost business and marketing useBest all-round choice
250 GSMThick, premium, card-likeLuxury brands, premium services, real estateNeeds scored fold lines
300 GSMVery stiffSpecial premium use onlyRequires deep scoring — confirm with Tagsen
350 GSMMaximum thicknessSpecialty finishing only⚠Consult before ordering for tri fold

Tagsen's recommendation for most clients: 170 GSM with matte or velvet finish. It folds cleanly, feels premium without being stiff, and photographs well if you are posting brochure images online.

A note on Indian paper and humidity

India's climate affects paper behaviour, especially in coastal cities and during monsoon months. High-humidity environments cause paper fibres to expand slightly, which can make fold lines stiffer than expected. We account for this in our scoring process — especially on orders above 200 GSM. If you are ordering for a coastal market, always mention it when placing your order.

Paper Finish Options

Tagsen offers three lamination options for tri fold brochures — No Lamination, Matte, and Velvet. Here is how to choose:

Matte lamination: Easy to read, minimal glare, slightly soft feel. Best for corporate, healthcare, educational, and information-heavy brochures. The most popular finish in Tagsen's order history. Text stays sharp and clear even in bright light.

Velvet lamination: Premium tactile finish — smooth and slightly velvety to the touch. Popular with real estate, luxury services, and high-end brands. Adds significant perceived value.

How to Prepare Your Tri Fold Design for Print

Whether you are using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or Canva, these are the file requirements Tagsen needs for clean print output.

Document size: Set up at the flat (open) size — not the folded panel size.

Bleed: Add 3 mm bleed on all four outer edges of the flat sheet. Bleed does not apply to internal fold lines — only the outer trim edges.

Colour mode: CMYK, not RGB. RGB is for screens. Printing uses CMYK. If you submit an RGB file, colours will shift — sometimes significantly.

Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI for all images and graphics. Lower resolution looks sharp on screen but blurry in print.

Fonts: Embed or outline all fonts before exporting. Missing fonts cause layout shifts.

File format: Export as PDF (Print quality, with bleed marks and crop marks included). We accept AI and PSD files but PDF is the safest format.

Fold guides: Add fold guide lines at the correct positions and include them in your file. We will verify them before going to press.

Design Tips From Our Print Floor

These observations come from years of checking files before they go to print — and from seeing the difference between brochures that communicate well and ones that do not.

Front panel: one message only. The front cover should tell the reader exactly what the brochure is and give them a reason to open it. One headline, one image, one logo. Nothing else.

Keep content 5–6 mm away from fold lines. Text or images that touch fold lines get distorted or obscured. This is especially true on heavier paper where the fold line creates a small ridge.

Back panel: make it useful as a standalone. When a brochure sits face-down on a desk or in a rack, the back panel is all anyone sees. Put your phone number, website, QR code, or address here. Make it functional.

Inside spread: think as one canvas. When the brochure opens fully, the three inside panels should feel unified — not like three separate boxes. Use a consistent visual theme and let design elements breathe across panel boundaries.

Minimum font size: 9 pt for body text. Brochures are often read in imperfect conditions — in a waiting room, outside in sunlight, on the move. Small text creates friction. 10–11 pt is more comfortable.

Limit yourself to two typefaces. One for headings, one for body. More than two creates visual noise in a small format.

Common Mistakes We See in Files Sent to Tagsen

These are the most frequent file problems we catch during our pre-press check:

Wrong flat size: The file is set up at the folded panel size instead of the flat sheet size. Everything needs to be rebuilt.

Equal panel widths: All three panels are the same width. The inner panel needs to be 2–4 mm narrower depending on paper weight.

No bleed: Background colours or images stop at the document edge. After trimming, a white border appears.

RGB colour mode: File looks correct on screen but colours shift when converted to CMYK for print.

Low-resolution images: Photos look sharp at 72 DPI on screen but print blurry at 300 DPI output.

Important content near folds: Text, logos, or key visuals placed within 5 mm of a fold line get obscured after folding.

We catch all of these during our free file check before your job goes to press. But getting your file right from the start makes the process faster for everyone.

Where Tri Fold Brochures Work Best in India

From our client orders across Ahmedabad, Surat, Mumbai, Delhi, and beyond — here is where tri fold brochures consistently deliver results:

Real estate: A4 tri fold with matte or soft-touch lamination. Property photographs, floor plan, key features, and agent contact — all fit comfortably across six panels. One of Tagsen's highest-volume brochure categories.

Hospitals and clinics: A4 matte, 170 GSM. Easy to read, professional appearance, easy to update when services change. Healthcare information brochures in waiting rooms are still heavily used in India.

Restaurants and food businesses: DL format with velvet lamination. Menu items, photos, and contact or delivery details. Compact enough for tabletops, attractive enough to be kept.

Corporate and B2B: A4 with soft-touch or matte lamination. Company overview, services list, team highlights, and a call to action. Given at meetings, left in reception areas, sent in proposal packages.

Why Tri Fold Brochures Still Work in 2026

In an era where most communication is digital, printed brochures continue to hold value for a simple reason: they are physical objects that people hold, keep, and share.

A well-designed brochure on quality paper leaves an impression that an email or social post cannot match. When a potential client holds a Tagsen-printed brochure and feels the weight and finish of the paper, it communicates something about the quality of your business — before they have read a single word.

That said, a poorly printed or incorrectly sized brochure communicates the opposite. Which is exactly why size, paper, and file setup matter as much as the design itself.

Final Thoughts

Choosing the right tri fold brochure size is not the last step in the design process — it is the first. Get the size, paper, and panel layout right before designing, and everything that follows becomes easier.

The brochure folds cleanly. The panels sit flat. The paper feels right in the reader's hand. And the overall impression of your brand is elevated — not undermined — by the physical object you have chosen to represent it.

At Tagsen, we have seen both outcomes. We know the difference a 2 mm panel offset makes. We know what 170 GSM matte feels like versus 250 GSM velvet. And we verify every file before it goes to press so that the brochure you receive matches the one you imagined.
