Panel Sizes: The Most Misunderstood Part of Tri Fold Design

How to Prepare Your Tri Fold Design for Print

Whether you are using Adobe InDesign, Illustrator, or Canva, these are the file requirements Tagsen needs for clean print output.

Document size: Set up at the flat (open) size — not the folded panel size.

Bleed: Add 3 mm bleed on all four outer edges of the flat sheet. Bleed does not apply to internal fold lines — only the outer trim edges.

Colour mode: CMYK, not RGB. RGB is for screens. Printing uses CMYK. If you submit an RGB file, colours will shift — sometimes significantly.

Resolution: Minimum 300 DPI for all images and graphics. Lower resolution looks sharp on screen but blurry in print.

Fonts: Embed or outline all fonts before exporting. Missing fonts cause layout shifts.

File format: Export as PDF (Print quality, with bleed marks and crop marks included). We accept AI and PSD files but PDF is the safest format.

Design Tips From Our Print Floor

Front panel: one message only. The front cover should tell the reader exactly what the brochure is and give them a reason to open it. One headline, one image, one logo. Nothing else.

Keep content 5–6 mm away from fold lines. Text or images that touch fold lines get distorted or obscured. This is especially true on heavier paper where the fold line creates a small ridge.

Back panel: make it useful as a standalone. When a brochure sits face-down on a desk or in a rack, the back panel is all anyone sees. Put your phone number, website, QR code, or address here. Make it functional.

Inside spread: think as one canvas. When the brochure opens fully, the three inside panels should feel unified — not like three separate boxes. Use a consistent visual theme and let design elements breathe across panel boundaries.

Minimum font size: 9 pt for body text. Brochures are often read in imperfect conditions — in a waiting room, outside in sunlight, on the move. Small text creates friction. 10–11 pt is more comfortable.

Limit yourself to two typefaces. One for headings, one for body. More than two creates visual noise in a small format.
